With the arrival of winter in South Africa, the likelihood of catching colds and ‘flu’ significantly increases. Dr Masemola, a family GP based at The Square Shopping Centre, Sunninghill, shares his expert advice on dodging this seasonal bullet:

Boost Your Immune System

A strong immune system is your first line of defence. Focus on a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. Vitamins C, D, and zinc can be particularly beneficial. Regular physical activity and sufficient sleep are also crucial in keeping your immune system robust.

Practice Good Hygiene

Frequent and thorough handwashing is one of the most effective ways to prevent the catching, or spreading, of respiratory viruses. Dr Masemola advises washing hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, especially after being in public places or having used public transport. Also, avoid touching your face with unwashed hands, as viruses can enter the body through the eyes, nose, and mouth.

Stay Hydrated

Keeping hydrated is essential during the winter months. Drink lots of water as, amongst other benefits, this helps to maintain the mucosal membranes in the nose and throat, which provide a barrier against pathogens. Herbal teas and warm water can also be soothing, and offer additional benefits for throat health.

Vaccinations

The ‘flu’ vaccine is updated annually, to combat the most common strains expected each year. By getting vaccinated, you not only protect yourself, but also help to protect more vulnerable members of the public, by reducing the spread of the virus.

Manage Stress

Stress is notorious for weakening the immune system. Dr Masemola suggests incorporating stress-reduction techniques (such as meditation, yoga, or even simple breathing exercises) into your daily routine.

Avoid Close Contact with Sick Individuals

Try to avoid close contact with people who are visibly sick, and if you yourself are ill, stay at home from work or school, in order to recover fully, and protect others from exposure.

Keep Indoor Environments Clean

The regular disinfection of frequently touched surfaces (such as doorknobs, keyboards, and phones) will help to eliminate germs that accumulate. Furthermore, ensuring that you have good ventilation in your living and working spaces can also reduce the concentration of airborne viruses.

By following these practical tips from Dr Masemola, you can significantly reduce your risk of catching colds and ‘flu’ this winter season. Stay proactive about your health, and encourage others to follow these guidelines, to foster a healthier community for everyone.
